Efficient logistics and user-friendly products. Everything is in the details when the new Hospital Nordmøre and Romsdal on Hjelset is built

Aug 6, 2024

Expensive, rigid and difficult to handle. That has been the description of halogen-free cables. Right up until today. Because in the extensive construction project of New Hospital Nordmøre and Romsdal, those involved have experienced what it is like to work with the cables of the future - Nexans Easy series.

Few square meters. Lots of cable.

In the spring of 2025, the New Hospital Nordmøre and Romsdal (SNR) will be ready. The installation and service company Bravida Norge has the electrical contract for the construction project. Svein Valle works as a project manager in Bravida Norge Trondheim, and can say that the work on the new hospital has been both exciting and extensive.

- This is a relatively large project. The total contract framework is approximately NOK 400 million. And right now we are in a good flow, I would say that we are at the peak of production.

Valle clarifies that project implementation, capacity and competence are important factors in the project.

“ Building a hospital is a rather complex project, it is about factors such as technical solutions and medical technology areas. It is technically difficult on a small area, which also means that there is a lot of cable in a few square meters, so everything has to be of the best quality. A cable that is more user-friendly can, for example, save us both time and money. ”

The most important thing is safety

The new Sjukehuset Nordmøre og Romsdal hospital, like all other hospitals, will safeguard lives and use a lot of expensive electronic equipment, so it's important to use solutions that reduce the risk of fire. This is why fire-resistant (halogen-free) and functionally safe cables are primarily used in such buildings. This avoids the risks of black and corrosive smoke that PVC entails.

- Halogen-free cables have had a reputation for being difficult to work with, but this has really changed, says Tore Bjørn Håkonsen, Product Manager at Nexans. The Nexans Easy series is a good example of this. The cables are easy to work with, flexible and quick to install.

In addition to Bravida Norway and Nexans, the company Onninen has also been involved in the project with the new hospital - as a wholesaler.

- Our relationship with Bravida Norway has always been good, and it has contributed to efficient logistics in this project, says Trond Sagmyr, sales representative at Onninen. We have good experience of working with Bravida Norway on previous projects. They know that we can be trusted as a wholesaler, and we know that they are always good at buying the goods they need well in advance. Then the goods also arrive at the agreed time. As the largest wholesaler in Norway, we are completely dependent on good logistics and good communication with our customers, and this has also been the case in our work with Nexans' Easy series.

Short-distance cables

Valle emphasizes that both products and delivery reliability have been important in the collaboration with Nexans.

- Firstly, the technical solution is important given that the cables will be used in different areas, says Valle. The second thing we are concerned about is delivery reliability and logistics. I also feel that all the various parties in the project are very competent. With a tight schedule, we are completely dependent on getting what we need at the right time, so we have to work closely together.

“ It's also an advantage that Nexans is based in Norway. It helps to make everything more short-range, so to speak, and ensures that we get delivered what we need when we need it. ”

Efficient production? Yes, please.

For Svein Valle in Bravida Norway, it has been natural for Nexans to be part of the hospital project.

“ I've worked as an electrician, project manager and design manager, and have thus been involved in many different projects. And Nexans has always been there, as a loyal and steady supplier. I have always been satisfied with the product - no matter what kind of project it has been. ”

He finishes:

- A national construction project like the New Nordmøre and Romsdal Hospital has a fairly short construction period. This places demands on planning and logistics in all phases. So it's definitely an advantage that we can work with cables that are more flexible. If you can use four men instead of eight when pulling a cable, it's clear that production becomes far more efficient. That means a lot to us.
