Low-smoke Low Fire Hazard cables for safe and attractive buildings

As the first in Norway, Nexans has committed to phasing out PVC and halogens in cables for buildings. It helps you increase fire safety, reduce financial risk, and can contribute to achieving eco-labelling of buildings.

Make good material choices

Whether you're managing a new build or refurbishment project, you should choose your materials and installations carefully. In the event of a fire, your choices can affect the risk to life and health, the extent of damage to property and the environmental impact of a fire.

The safe choice is halogen-free cables.

How do cables affect fire safety?

The release of smoke and harmful gases from burning materials is one of the main hazards of fire. It's the smoke - not the flames - that kills most people, and corrosive gases can cause major damage to installations, fixtures and infrastructure.

Cables with polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, have been the most common choice in Norwegian buildings. PVC contains phthalates, a type of plastic softener that can have an endocrine-disrupting effect on humans. When PVC burns, thick black smoke is produced, making it difficult to see escape routes and evacuate quickly.

Three good reasons to choose halogen-free for your next project:

Saving lives

Halogen-free cables produce less and white smoke, and almost no harmful gases when burning. This makes it easier to evacuate - and can save lives. This type of cable is also flame-retardant, which can delay and limit the course of a fire.

Lower financial risk

The lack of corrosive gases generated will reduce the extent of damage to assets. It causes less harmful residues and waste, and can reduce clean-up, rehabilitation and maintenance costs.

Fulfilling requirements for future-oriented buildings:

Our Nordic neighbours follow stricter building regulations for fire safety than we do, but interest in halogen-free alternatives is now growing here too. Among other things, halogen-free cables can help to achieve eco-labelling of buildings. You can therefore win over buyers and tenants by being at the forefront of your new build and refurbishment projects now.

An investment in halogen-free cables means an investment in safe buildings with better financial security and long-term competitiveness.
